Women During The Pandemic
The pandemic hit hard. No social class or age group has been spared.
Lost lives, ruined businesses, impacted health.
This social documentary tries to look at various impacts social distancing, lockdowns etc had on women, visualised via photographs of mannequins.
Being seen as (sexual) objects. Suffering pure boredom in isolation. Losing their creativity as their inner muse felt encaged. Experiencing a role model back flip: Back to housework and childcare - even whilst working from home. Pausing or abandoning work careers.
Social isolation let many women suffer from mental health issues like depression.
Another severe problem: The increase of domestic violence against women who couldn’t escape intimidating or life threatening situations due to lockdowns. The United Nations named the enorm increase of domestic violence against women during the pandemic in a report 2021 a ‘shadow pandemic’. The ‘Crime Survey for England and Wales’ reported an increase in calls on the National Domestic Abuse Helpline of 65% between April and June 2020 compared to the first three month of that year. It’s more important than ever not to forget but help women in toxic, dangerous relationships.
